3 painful miles...on a treadmill, or was it a swimming pool?

Thursday, August 06, 2009 Tonight, was the first chance I have had to run since Sunday. I managed to get to the treadmills and slowly and somewhat painfully knock out 3 miles. I did some...I guess you could call it speed work for the last mile or so to try and make it interesting. My heart wasn't in it though...I kept thinking about home, my family...anywhere but here. And the end of the workout I was drenched in sweat. I literally felt like I had run in a swimming pool I was so soaked.
Last weeks totals weren't bad, though. I finished with 21 miles for the week. The 5k 'loop' I ran at the beginning of the week in 35:45. The last loop of the week was at 34:11. So at least I'm getting back into the swing of things. I can't remember the total number of calories burned, but I think it was around 2800 calories.
On the bright side though, I do feel better after the run. A little more relaxed anyway.

Motivated...or, Not?

Last night I forced myself to crank out 4 miles on the treadmill. We have a TV in our cardio room, but apparently the DVD player that was in there, and the satellite connection to Armed Forces Network have 'disappeared'.
Tough cranking out miles when you are looking at an off-white wall 8 feet in front you.
I really tried to get out this morning and do a run around outside, but I just couldn't drag myself out of bed. I was up until midnite trying to do a plan for my job here that is honestly, somewhat absurd.
Well, tomorrow I made a deal with one of my buddies, and we are getting up early together and force each other to run.
His idea, but he isn't happy about me wanting to shoot for 4.5 miles tomorrow.
Ah, the joys of small running groups!

First real week of training

Here we are in Afghanstan. I am finally settled in a little bit anyway, and I was able to actually get in a little training.
For the week, I ran 5 times for a total just over 15 miles. Rough going so far. The air here is not the best, and for some reason, I just can't seem to find my pace and my breath. I am getting there though.
Oddly enough, I actually have plenty of space to run in safety. I use the word safely loosely, but for the most part it's ok.
Even so, finding the time and the motivation to run has been hard. Long days turn into long nights. I try to get up and start running early, early in the morning to beat the heat and humidity of the day.
Other than that, we are going to be running our first satellite race here on my FOB. Lake Tahoe Marathon has graciously agreed to let us organize and run 5k, 10k, and half marathon distances. I am really looking forward to it.

I just wanted to say thanks to Les, over at Lake Tahoe Marathon. They have agreed to let us run a shadow race here in Afghanistan.
So, sometime in the fall(vague for a reason) we will be running the Afghanistan Lake Tahoe Half-Marathon/10k/5k races.
Thanks again Les!

Getting Ready

Here I am, still in Indiana training up to go to Afghanistan. We'll be leaving here in the next three weeks and getting to our new home for the next year.

I have managed to get in a couple of runs while here training. I was expecting to be able to hit more trail running here, but all the trails are through live training areas, and I have not been able to get clearance or a schedule to where I can run other than around the main cantonment.
Something about trying to run through an area where people are shooting live rounds just doesn't make me comfortable.
I did get an update as far where my unit will be and an attached comment was, "Tell your runners there is plenty of space to run, bring trail shoes."
I am assuming that the trail shoe comments is because it's not paved, but it was pleasant to find out that I will be able to run on something other than a treadmill in a cramped gym.
Of course, situation will dictate. I am hoping to get responses back from some race organizers about setting up a sattelite race or two while we are there. So far though, no responses. I was at least expecting to get a response from the Vegas marathon organizers, but no dice there either.
It has been kind of nice to run where it's green, but I miss my desert runs. I miss the trails in the foothills and mountains around Vegas.

Yesterday I went to the ER because I had a sharp pain in my right foot in the arch. It was accompanied by a bump. No broken bones, but apparently a good sized heel spur and something on a tendon in my right foot. Waiting for the podiatrist to call me back so I can get it looked at.
Just what I need a week out from mobilizing with the Ntnl Guard

6ml, 3.24ml, and a Saturday Morning Run

I meant to actually post to this blog regularly, but...well, here we go.
Last Saturday I was invited out to run with a couple of friends and managed to complete around 6 miles with them. That was probably the longest run I had done in months.
Today, I went out for a quick 3miles or so, and it was worth it. It felt pretty good and not to much of strain on my left heel.
By far though, the most enjoyable 'run' I went on in the past couple weeks was with my son. He flew into town a couple of weeks ago, and I took him to run the Calico Tanks trail at Red Rock Canyon. At first I don't think he really enjoyed it, and so I slowed it down a little and turned into more of a hike, which was prudent anyway because of the trail.
Once we got to the top of the Tanks, and he saw the view of Vegas spread out before him...it was all worth it. I loved being able to share something like with my son, and I think he enjoyed it too. at least he said the view was worth the climb.

Looking forward to Saturday

My son flies in tomorrow, and Saturday we are going for a run at Red Rock Canyon. It will be our first father/son run.
My son is a new addition to the running community, and I am really looking forward to running with him.

This weekend will probably be the last chance I have to see him before I leave for Afghanistan, I want to make the most of it.
